Summary
The GTM NERR Butterfly Monitoring Project is a volunteer-based program were volunteers survey four transects (restricted search) within the GTM NERR monthly and record all butterflies that inhabit or visit a site. The GTM NERR project was set-up by Dr. Akers Pence of the Florida Butterfly Monitoring Network (FBMN). The goal of the project is to promote and survey the health of butterfly populations throughout Florida.

Notes
Application
Detailed knowledge about butterfly populations provides important information about how certain species respond to various land management practices such as prescribed burning and the control of invasive plant species. Butterfly species’ reports will provide data about the success of land restoration programs as well as give land managers greater insight into ecosystem health because of butterflies important role in pollination.

Method
The reistricted search method is used to evaluate four transects or census routes (A, B, C, and D) located within the trail system at the GTM NERR. Census routes are monitored monthly with additional monitoring occurring annually on July 4. Each census is taken by a single observer between 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. or 2 - 4 p.m. Runs are conducted on days with less than 50% cloud cover and non-windy days. All species are sighted within a detection radius of roughly 6 meters to each side of the route.
