Summary
For the past four years, research scientists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the University of South Florida, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, and the University of Miami have comprehensively reviewed the wide array of water quality data collected in southern Florida, compiled comparable datasets, visualized trends in water quality data, and constructed a set of criteria for standards between monitoring programs that would allow for increased interoperability. Through year 4, the team has identified 8 programs that meet the criteria for inclusion in the database across the FCR. These eight programs include: NOAA AOML (Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory) South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Cruise, the Florida International University South Florida Estuaries Water Quality Program, the DERM Water Quality Monitoring Program, the Broward County Water Quality Monitoring Program, the DEP-ECA Coral Ecosystem Conservation Area Water Quality Assessment Program, the City of Miami Beach Water Monitoring, the North Biscayne Bay Seagrass Loss Water Quality Monitoring Program and Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserves Continuous Water Quality Monitoring, and the Palm Beach County Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Program. Additionally, the research team has developed and released to the public many products including trend and gap analyses, maps, and other data visualizations.
Parameters
Aggregated parameters include TN, Nitrite, Nitrate, Ammonium, TKN; TP, Orthophosphate; Silicates, Turbidity. Not all parameters are available all locations, as some programs do not collect all parameters.

Method
Data is collected from 8 water quality monitoring programs across Florida's Coral Reef and aggregated. Trends are analyzed using the Seasonal Mann-Kendall test to determine slope of individual parameters. See individual monitoring program metadata for more information about the sampling methods and analyses. Parameters for inclusion in the unified water quality monitoring database include: 1) Sampled within South Florida; 2) Sampled at least four water quality parameters of interest (i.e., Chlorophyll-a, nitrate (NO3), nitrite (NO2), nitrate+nitrite (NOx), soluble reactive phosphorus (PO4), silica (Si), turbidity, total nitrogen (TKN), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP)); 3) Contains unique sampling data (i.e., not a derivative dataset from another program, or uploaded to multiple portals); 4) Is still actively sampling; 5) Has at least five years of continuous data. *The last two criteria were waived in 2022 to include Biscayne Bay Water Watch and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Water Quality Monitoring Project as monitoring programs.
