Summary
The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTM NERR) is biogeographically positioned at the ecotone of two different emergent vegetation habitats: salt marsh (dominated by smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora) and mangroves (dominated by black mangroves, Avicennia germinans) (Zomlefer et al. 2006; Frazel 2009). As such, the primary goal of this project is to conduct long-term monitoring of mangroves in emergent intertidal habitats within the GTM NERR to provide a better understanding of the ecological characteristics of this dynamic community and discern the impacts of local and global environmental changes on the estuarine ecosystem.
