Summary
The EBAP macroalgae sampling program was established to address the following questions: • Which algae species make up the drift algal communities in our seagrass beds? • What contribution does each species make to the overall biomass of algae? • Are there seasonal differences in algal community composition? • Is the presence/absence (or bloom behavior) of a given alga indicative of some water quality parameter or event of interest (for example, does a bloom of species X occur in conjunction with a prolonged low salinity event?) • Does increased abundance of a given species of algae correlate with declines in seagrass? (indicating that that species shades out seagrass or fosters habitat of seagrass consumers, etc.)
Parameters
abundance, species, dry weight
Notes
Drift algae abundance has also been been recorded since 2002 as part of the Estero Bay Seagrass Monitoring program.
Application
to assist in understanding what typical abundances of various algal species are at different sites within Estero Bay
