Summary
Monthly nest counts of wading and diving birds are conducted by Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserves staff in coordination with Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on mangrove islands within CHAP. Colonial wading and diving bird nest monitoring began in 2008 with 9 islands and expanded to 38 islands by 2017. Wading and diving birds are an indicator species of the overall health of an estuary. The purpose of this continuous study include documenting population trends; biodiversity on islands; and the shifts of wading and diving bird nesting efforts. Future goals include a detailed trend analysis of nesting efforts by species throughout the greater Charlotte Harbor estuary. CHAP monitors 21 islands while Ding Darling NWR monitors the remaining seventeen. The data is combined and submitted and published in the South Florida Wading Bird Report annually. Fishing line and trash cleanups on these islands are also conducted annually after nesting activity has subsided. Bird fatalities are documented and submitted into the Florida Fish and Wildlife Bird Mortality database. Brown Pelicans are submitted in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Shorebird database.
