Summary

Dead, buried oyster shells were collected from replicate hand cores at one to five reefs in each of 12 locations around the state. The samples are being used to estimate historical oyster body size for the local oyster populations in each sampling location.

Sample locations with coordinates outside of a managed area, but within 5m of a managed area boundary were considered within the managed area (and their corresponding points are shown within the managed area boundary on all SEACAR maps).

Application

To supplement the live oyster monitoring datasets available to the SEACAR program for ORCP managed areas with estimated sizes of oysters that lived in those locations in the past in order to enable evaluation of oyster size trends over longer periods of time than is possible when using data from live oyster monitoring alone.

25cm x 25cm x 35cm (L x W x D) hand cores, sampled as two 10cm depth intervals starting at 15cm depth. Heights of left valves estimated to be at least 90% complete measured in mm with calipers.
