Summary
Aerial surveys were conducted to document manatee sightings in the Reserve and to gain information on public use within the Reserve, assess potential resource impacts and observe marine life "hot spots". Rookery Bay NERR biologists began monthly aerial watercraft and marine life monitoring in 2001. By conducting aerial surveys, staff were able to cover the entire monitoring area in one morning and were able to observe marine life more easily than monitoring by boat. The monitoring area extends from the north tip of Keewaydin Island (Gordon Pass) south to Cape Romano.
