Summary
A native bee survey was conducted in four different habitat types (beach/coastal strand, xeric hammock, pine plantation, and mesic hammock/formal gardens) as part of a reserve-wide survey in the GTM NERR. Bees were collected every three weeks in pan traps (passive sampling) and with nets as bees visited flowers (active sampling). Bees were brought back to the GTM NERR after each survey and processed (washed and dried), pinned, labeled and identified.

Notes
Application
Very little research has focused on pollinators, specifically native bees, of northeastern Florida and nothing exists of the native bees of the GTM NERR. Native bees are subject to the same pressures as all species, including loss of habitat through urbanization, habitat fragmentation, increased pesticide and herbicide use, pollution, invasive species, and global climate change. Project goals are to evaluate the effects of various management strategies (i.e. frequent prescribed fire, timber harvesting) on native bee populations and to educate the community and resource managers on the importance of native gardening.

Method
At each site two transects made up of 24 pan traps (8 of each color: white, florescent yellow, and florescent blue) were filled with soapy water and set out every three weeks. Pan traps were left out from approx. 9-10 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. Bees collected in pan traps and with nets during sample collections were brought back to the GTM NERR after each survey and processed (washed and dried), pinned, labeled and identified.
