Summary
GTM NERR participated in a NERR-wide (four northwestern NERR sites and five southeastern NERR sites) study to collect information on non-indigenous crab species and to monitor native abundance and diversity before, during, and after the non-indigenous crab invasion process.
Parameters
species, sex, carapace width (mm), gravid, parasitized, soft
Notes
Application
Data will enable us to determine the range extent of each non-indigenous crab species and, through time, track the rate of spread while predicting areas soon to be infested.
Publications
NERRS National Meeting, NERR websites, NERR specific outreach, and scientific publications
Start
2002

Frequency
Quarterly
Method
Seven habitat trays containing oyster shell were deployed in the vicinity of oyster reefs and were surveyed every three months for predicting non-indigenous crab range & expansion rate. All crabs found in collectors were identified, measured, and counted. The sex and general condition of crabs (reproductive status, molt stage, obvious parasites, etc.) were also noted. All non-indigenous individuals were removed from the natural system upon discovery.
Discontinuity
A few missing sampling events
