Summary
As a partner with FWC, Audubon Florida, and USFWS, RBNERR collects non-breeding shorebird data year-round to determine long-term coastal bird trends. Cape Romano, Keewaydin, and Ten Thousand Islands are surveyed for shorebird abundance, composition, habitat, and behavior.
Parameters
weather conditions, date, time, observers, disturbance, predator presence, flock location, species, number of individuals, tide cycle, number of banded birds, banded bird combination, wrack level
Notes
Application
This data is used in determining crucial shorebird habitat for future management. The data is also useful to determine shorebird responses to coastal changes such as storms or erosion.
Publications
Ten Thousand Islands data is shared with USFWS. Cape Romano and Keewaydin data is shared with FWC. All data is shared with Audubon Florida.

Method
Waterbirds are surveyed from boat. Using a scope or binoculars, number of individuals of each species are counted. Flocks are counted as 10 birds or more. Flock data includes species abundance, wrack level, coordinates, behavior, and disturbance.
Discontinuity
2007 to 2015 had limited surveys, 2016 to 2018 shifted to weekly surveys in the non-breeding season (Sept to April), 2018 surveyed biweekly or weekly year-round
